Question by brownfox (Jim)

I am moving locally and I got few quotes based on per hour fee.
What other extra fees do you know of that movers might request during or after the move?

Thank you

Jim,

For local moves you will be charged per hour, and that price will include the truck and the labor.

Usually there could be few additional charges:
  1. Travel time - usually moving company adds one flat hour to the final figure as the travel time it takes for the moving team to reach your home before the move officially starts.

  2. Packing materials - if your items require some packing materials to be used (not including moving pads and tape) then you will be charged extra per item used (usually those prices are very high, so try to buy all packing materials you will need for your move)

  3. Stairs charge - if your items need to be carried up the stairs you might be charged extra per flight of stairs.

  4. Long carry - if the truck cannot be parked close to your building's entry and your items need to be carried for longer then 100 feet (varies with a mover) you might be charged for that.

  5. Tips - movers should be tipped if they did a good job. Check this thread for tips on tipping the movers.

  6. Garbage removal - if you wanted your movers to unpack your items, and then take away the moving debris they might charge you garbage removal fees.

  7. Heavy or bulky items - if you have a heavy or bulky item to move (e.g. a piano) movers might charge you an extra fee for that.

  8. Special equipment use - in some cases your move will require a special equipment or machinery to be used, for example a to move a bulky item out of a window, and you will be charged extra for that.

Of course, since movers are very creative when it comes to extra charges this list might be far from complete, but it covers at least 95% of all cases.

In order to avoid any surprises dealing with extra moving fees make sure you think of all the special scenarios that might take place during your move, and check with the mover you book with that you are not going to be charged for that (or in case you would - then how much and under what circumstances).

Make sure all that is written on your estimate and signed by the mover's representative, together with a statement "No other additional or extra fees would be added to the price of this move under any circumstances".

That should give you some protection from especially greedy moving company owners or the foreman.

Good luck with your move,
