Question by Ctaylordunn (Corliss)
How much should I pay my mover up front?
How much is required to pay a mover before the day of the move?
One school of thought says that you shouldn't pay ANYTHING because it can be a sign of a disreputable moving company. It can also be a sign that you're working with a moving broker, which you want to avoid.
The other school of thought notes that in certain parts of the country, deposits or down payments are fairly common year-round, and in other parts of the country they might be more common in the busy summer months. Generally these are small amounts, maybe a couple of hundred dollars. You should be skeptical of large amounts, and you should find out the provisions for getting your money back if you cancel the move.
The companies who asked for these small downpayments note that they incur costs for attempting to compelte your move -- if you cancel at the last second, they're out money and resources to get the moving company to your house, or maybe they passed up other business to accomodate your move.
In the end, are you comfortable with the deposit that they're requesting? If you've done all your homework in choosing the moving company -- and you feel comfortable with that moving company -- then you can feel reasonably assured about the deposit. (Here's an article on choosing a moving company. This article addresses paying for your move with a credit card.)
Good luck with your move,
