-> When, what and how to move

Question by moreskog (Skog)

Am I getting scammed on my Massachusetts to Tennessee move?

We are going to be moving to TN in June from MA and were looking for long distance movers. We got a quote and the quote was based on cuft AND weight, all based on what I told them over the phone. Subsequent internet search has shown that they are likely at least slightly unscrupulous if not outright scammers. Also they are out of NJ, not MA. Do you have recommendations for my move?

If anything even 'suggests' your movers might be scammers, keep looking. There are a ton of good moving companies out there that are looking for business, so don't waste your time on a suspect company.

You have good reason to suspect this company is not legit.

First, getting a quote over the phone. Always insist on an in-home estimate. Filling out an online inventory or getting an estimate over the phone (unless your move is very small, which I doubt yours is) is a common way to get scammed. Here's what happens: The moving company gives you moving quotes based on your online survey, then comes out and says there are many things you asked to have moved that weren't on the inventory. So your price doubles. HAVE THEM COME TO YOUR HOME TO SEE EXACTLY WHAT YOU NEED MOVED.

Another warning sign here is that the company is in Jersey, and not the town you live in. When you hire moving companies, we recommend that people choose one that at least has a local office, if it not headquartered there. You want to go down and check out the moving company, make sure the name of the company you spoke with actually has their names on the truck, make sure the operation looks legit, etc.

Finally, ask the moving company this question -- if the company is in Jersey, how are they going to handle a move from Massachusetts to Tennessee? Logistically, how can they do it and still make a profit? Also, how flexible can they do with your delivery schedule if they're so far away?

Good luck with your move,
