Question by MMayer (sam)
Original company went bankrupt, should I pay the contractor?
I recently moved from florida to georgia. I paid the moving company $1650(I have the cancelled check). The moving company I paid contracted the move with another company whcih I did not know about. the company I paid 1650 to has gone backrupt and the other company has now sent mt to a collection agency saying that I did not pay for the move. Am I responsible for this even thought I paid the original company that went backrupt??? Confusing I know but I would like an answer. I do not think I am responsible???

Sam,
I believe this is more like a legal question. I would recommend you to consult an attorney with this particular issue.
With that being said I would like to say that since the contractor company provided the service and incurred costs it would only be fair to pay them. From what you said you cancelled the check, so in reality there was no payment made. If you would have paid the company you hired originally and the money would have been deducted from your account then you would have had at least the proof of payment, in which case I believe the dispute would have been between the contractor and the original company that went bankrupt.
But that is more like a personal opinion.
Good luck with your move,
