There are advantages and disadvantages of both. On one hand, having your car off the ground with a carrier will reduce the chance of damage to the car. At the same time carrier is heavier then dolly, adding that to the gas expense. Other then that both methods work fine.

Keep in mind that if your vehicle had any modifications towing it either way could cause damage (modifications could be lowered suspension, special exhaust systems etc).
