Summary:
I would recommend to using this company, although it seems like they have collected some bad reputation over the time. Their fleet is huge and this is an indication of a very big volume of moves, so it is not surprising that they had an incident here and there. In any case if you believe they gave you a very good offer make sure you follow all the guidelines in our Moving Guide regarding closing deals with movers and understanding your estimate.
Good luck with your move,

Molloy Bros. Moving & Storage Inc. US DOT #125563
Safety Of Use Rating: AA
(99.69%, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - see how we calculate SOUR)
From their website www.molloybros.com:
- This company is an agent of Mayflower Transit (a major van lines)
- Additional licensing information: I.C.C. N.O. MC-2934
- Serving the tri-state area for over 50 years
- Services offered: local, long distance, storage, commercial, international
- Number of trucks: over 100
- Storage: own 3,000,000 Cu. Ft. (150,000 Sq. Ft.), use sealed containers
- Packing services: offered. They claim to provide cartons and packing materials at a minimal cost, however I would recommend calling them before ordering the boxes and compare their prices to SmartPack Solutions.
- Contact Information: Telephones (800) 645-2798, (516) 396-8600, address: 195 Bethpage - Sweet Hollow Rd, Old Bethpage, N.Y. 11804,
From Safersys.org:
Safersys.org reveals the following information:
- Licensing info: US DOT #241034, MC #144078 (the ones you have and listed on their site are for Mayflower Transit LLC.)
- 98 trucks (very large fleet)
- The information in the Safersys.org report indicates no problems with their license and insurance.
- The only alarming thing I paid attention to in the Safersys.org report was their driver out-of-service inspections rating (that is 24.1% - almost 18% higher then the national average) - a very disturbing fact. On the other hand their vehicle out-of-service rating is very low compared to the average, which is good.
From Better Business Bureau:
- Members of the BBB
- Original Business Start Date: 1/1/1948 (!)
- Phone numbers: (516) 766-7300, (631) 763-2676, (212) 962-1900, (718) 895-1900, (516) 843-0900 (for some reason non of them match the ones specified on their website)
- Address - same as on their website
- This company has a satisfactory record with the BBB
- Number of complaints processed in the last 36 month: none
- Other names: Advance Relocation & Storage, Nilsson Moving & Storage
From other sources:
- New York State Movers & Warehousemens Association: listed as a member, has valid NYS DOT license (for local moves).
- Long Island Moving & Storage Association (LIMSA): listed as a member.
- MovingScam.com: they recommend to be cautious about using this company (although they do not list this company in their Black List). According to them the company has changed van lines frequently. First it was a North American agent, then Wheaton, and now (since 1999) Mayflower, which can be an indication of underlying problems. This company is discussed in 9 topics on MovingScam.com which is pretty high number. (See the full report here)
- RipoffReport.com: there is one complaint there (http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/ripoff161606.htm) dealing with a bad move they have performed for a customer in October 2005. The incident was resolved by compensating the customer, however since the report is still there I believe the customer was still unhappy with the outcome.
- Articles: I found two articles connected to this company: Jim Molloy keeps business moving with Advance and Advance Movers gets award for charity work. Both articles help better understand the structure of this company and directions this company took over the past few years.
