Question by HaleysOma (Susan Flowers)
I'm looking for guidelines for putting items into permanent storage--say 15 months. What shall I use to wrap items? Are there particular types of boxes? Do we need to have crates constructed?

Susan,
It really depends on the type of storage you choose - is it going to be a regular storage unit or a climate controlled unit.
In any case, here are some points for you use when preparing for long-term storage:
- You don't really need to crate your items - standard sturdy boxes would work just fine.
- Before packing the boxes make sure you pad them from inside, for example with old newspapers (especially if you are packing books), or plastic shopping bags. Alternatively you could use unprinted packing paper. This will give your items additional protection against moisture.
- You should also use shrink wrap (also called stretch wrap) to wrap all your items (especially if you store padded furniture or rugs, since they get dusted real easily). Wrapping boxes is also recommended.
- For the furniture on top of the shrink wrap you should put some extra protection in form of moving pads (you should actually wrap and pad all your furniture before you move it to the storage, since it gives extra protection during the move itself).
I would recommend you to read some more importan tips for long term storage in our Moving Guide->Preparing your items for storage.
Good luck with your move,
