Question by SeanA (Sean)

I am moving from Massachusetts to California and very nervous about the movers. They initially told me it would take 7-10 days to move my stuff. They called my the other day and said it would be 3 weeks. Is there anything I could do about this?

Sean,

Unfortunately, there is not much you can do about it. According to industry regulations long distance movers are allowed to deliver your items (for moves such as yours) within 21 day from the pickup date.

During off-season periods it often takes less time to deliver shipments across country, and that is the reason why many salespeople often take the freedom of giving potential customers those estimates. In August, however, the chances of getting your shipment delivered in less then 3 weeks are very little, and the company representative should have told you that before he booked you.

On the other hand, consumers often choose those companies that promise them unrealistic terms over those that tell the truth, so it is also one of the reasons why salespeople tend to go that way.

On the more practical side, you could call the dispatch often to remind them that you were promissed faster delivery. This way you will sooner or later force the dispatch to release your shipment earlier, just to get you off their necks. Its cruel, but so is the moving industry.

Good luck with your move,
