Question by MK (MK)

Consumer Report: Moishes Moving Systems, USDOT #587098

I am moving from Evanston, IL to Charlottesville, VA. I've got a decent quote from Moishe's Moving Systems ($1700 for one bedroom - 2500lb). I have checked different moving review sites and found out that they seem to be doing good job for local move, however, I am a bit concerned about their performance on long-distance move. I was wondering if you could rate this company for me.

Moishe's Moving Systems (Moishe's of Chicago)
2233 S Throop St., Chicago, IL 60608
1-866-754-6969
USDOT 587098

Thank you,

MK

Moishe's Moving Systems of Chicago, USDOT#1064024

Safety Of Use Rating: B
(81.92%, RELATIVELY SAFE - see how we calculate SOUR)

Moishe's is a very big player here in greater New York City, and they opened a branch (or an agent for that matter) in Chicago, under a different USDOT. I will perform a review of that entity separately from the main company in Jersey City.

From their website www.moishesofchicago.com:

  • This company is independent (not an agent for any major van lines).
  • Licensing information: not specified
  • Contact Information:
    phones:
    866.932.9366
    address:
    2233 S. Throop Street
    Chicago, IL 60608

  • Members of: AMSA, BBB, Illinois Movers and Warehousemen?s Association

From Safersys.org:

Safersys.org reveals the following information:
  • Licensing info: US DOT #1064024, MC #444148
  • Trucks: 3.
  • Phones: (866) 752-6969
  • Office location: 2211 S. Throop Street, Chicago, IL 60608
  • The information in the Safersys.org report indicates no problems with their license and insurance.
  • Inspections section shows the following statistics:
    - Driver out-of-service rating: above the national average
    - Vehicle out-of-service rating: below the national average
From Better Business Bureau:

  • Members of the BBB
  • Original Business Start Date: December 2001
  • Number of complaints processed in the last 36 months: 6. Complaints issues: Contract Issues (1), Billing or Collection Issues (1), Delivery Issues (1), Refund or Exchange Issues (1), and Customer Service Issues (2). The complaints were mostly resolved.
    From other sources:

    Summary:

It seems like Moishe's of Chicago are relatively safe - from the amount of complaints and the size of their fleet we concluded that even for long distance moves they managed to keep their record clean enough (keep in mind they are supported by the NYC headquarters and the NJ fleet, making them a safer company to use compared to just any other independent mover with similar fleet size and number of complaints).

We would generally recommend using this company, however in case of a long distance move before making your choice you should ask them the following questions:
    1. Who is going to deliver your stuff to the final destination? This company is not an agent of any major van lines, so they either have their own interstate trucks, or they use a subcontractor.

    2. If they use a subcontractor it will still be OK to use them - as long as you run a similar investigation of the company they plan to subcontract your job to. Get the name of the company they use for delivery, however keep in mind that there are hundreds of independent truck owners that small and medium size companies use as subcontractors.

    Good luck with your move,
