Question by mcnaugdo (Doug)
Moving SF Bay Area to Maine
We are moving about 5200-5800 lbs (2 bedroom) from the San Francisco bay area to Maine and looking at a few binding (not-to-exceed)estimates from the following. Any recomendations?
Earl Farnsworth - Mayflower ($6100)
A+P Moving - Bekins ($6200)
Peeters - Atlas ($6400)
Graf - United ($7200)
Wheaton
Corovan - N American
Lightning van Lines - (about $4200)(New ownership - but some complaints and no CA license))
Thanks

First of all, this is interstate move, so the company only needs an interstate license (USDOT).
Assuming you have 5800 lbs you are looking at $0.90-$1.1 per lb range of prices, so you are looking at $5220-$6380, and adding some extra charges for things like packing materials of shuttle service (if required) you are looking at a price range of $5500-$6600.
Given those numbers I would say you got some decent estimates (especially if they are GNTE, but you have to make sure it is written on every form you will sign, Binding Estimate, Order for Service and Bill of Lading).
Out of all the companies we only rated Lightning Van Lines, and it seems like they gave you a very suspicious offer ($4200 GNTE is basically $0.72 per pound with no cover for extra expenses like shuttle service, so they are left with a tiny profit margin if any - I only know a handpick of companies (all of them own interstate trucks) that can guarrantee you such a deal and still make some profit.)
Graf's (United) offer seems to be quite expensive, compared to other van lines, and you did not specify offers from Wheaton and North American agents, so I would suggest you to stick to the other three (Mayflower, Atlas and Bekins) agents. Their estimates seem to be just right, and being agents of major van lines you are guarranteed some security from dealing with rough situations (though not completely protected).
Good luck with your move,
