FINDING A MOVER

Question by wheatbread (Charles)
Should I hire movers from my city for a long distance move, or out of state movers are also fine?
Moving from Boston to Chicago and I have too many quotes from moving companies. I've read alot, but still confused. I've narrowed it down to Key Moving & Storage (In NY) and I'm looking into a local company Liberty Moving & Storage. My question is: I've heard a lot of the scams are from FL companies, and I've eliminated a lot of them either since their offices were so far away and from all the scams. Is this a good strategy? I'm trying to get the local company to come out and do an inventory, and get a binding contract. Key Moving gave me a binding contract based on my inventory. Again, is this good practice?

First of all filtering out scam movers is a very good idea as you already mentioned. Florida is not the only state known for being a moving scam hotbed, New York City is another infamous moving scam center. Key Moving happened to be a B company according to our SOUR formula, meaning it is relatively safe to use.
At the same time, from your question I understand that you are trying to decide whether it is OK to accept binding estimate from NY company that cannot come to your house for visual estimate. In general, we do not recommend doing that, since this kind of a deal is still prone to future problems.
My recommendation would be to only consider those companies that are capable of coming in and doing visual estimate + flat price deal. It is still fine to hire a reliable NY company that will be able to send a visual estimator to your apartment (I even know some freelancers that companies can hire locally), as long as they guarantee that they will not act as brokers (meaning hire a third party mover to do the actual move), but will send you one of their own trucks. In that case it is a good idea to check with the local DOT if this company in fact owns interstate trucks.
Good luck with your move,
