Movers that specialize in moving pianos
There are many movers that only specialize in moving pianos.
Often stores that sell or service pianos have their own movers, or work with specialty piano movers.
Moving a piano is a special skill, and it also requires special equipment. It should be noticed though that many ordinary moving companies offer piano move services as well.
If you happen to hire an ordinary moving company to move your piano you should verify with the representative of that company that it has the right equipment, and that their movers are trained to move pianos. If you are unsure about their piano moving skills then you should only hire them to move your other items, and get specialty piano movers to move the piano in a separate move.
From my personal experience I know piano movers indeed determine the price by the size of the piano. Regular movers might also charge per piano size, but they would often charge you per hour as they do for any other local move.
Long distance piano moves, however, are determined by weight, although you could (and should) get a flat price for the move. Long distance piano moves require crating to protect your piano, and for that you might need to actually hire a serviceman that specializes in preparing pianos for long distance trips (call your piano store for references).

Question by sapphire (celeaster)
Are there specialty movers that specialize in moving pianos? How is the price determined? By the size of the piano, or what?
