Federal Movers, USDOT#1432749

Safety Of Use Rating: B
(87.95%, BE CAUTIOUS - see how we calculate SOUR)

After running a short investigation on that company I discovered that it is most probably tightly affiliated (probably owned by the same people) with a large company named American Van Line Worldwide Moving Inc (lets call them AVLWM for the purpose of this investigation). Both companies have the same address, and when I looked for Federal on BBB by entering their phone number (taken from their file in safersys.org) I found the file of AVLWM (no other BBB file for Federal was found).

Moreover, AVLWM seem to have lost their authority on 02/22/2006, and it make sense to assume they would use a new company like Federal as a cover for their operations.

For the purpose of this investigation I will assume its the same company and will combine all the data found about both those companies.

From their website www.federalmovers.com:

  • This company is independent (not an agent for any major van lines).
  • Licensing information: US DOT #1432749, MC #541368, CALT #315586
  • Contact Information:
    phones:
    877-622-1770
    address:
8411 Canoga Avenue, Canoga Park, CA 91304

  • Members of: not specified.

From Safersys.org:

There are two files we take into consideration. Safersys.org reveals the following information:
  • Licensing info:
Federal: US DOT #1432749, MC #541368,
AVLWM: US DOT #1010910, MC #426350

  • Trucks: 31.
  • Phones: (818) 993-1109, (818) 993-0313
  • Office location: 8411 Canoga Avenue, Canoga Park, CA 91304
  • The information in the Safersys.org report indicates no problems with Federal's license and insurance, but AVLWM don't seem to have proper licensing and insurance.
  • Inspections section shows the following statistics:
    - Driver out-of-service rating: above the national average
    - Vehicle out-of-service rating: below the national average
From Better Business Bureau:

  • Not members of the BBB
  • Original Business Start Date: 1/1/1993
  • BBB company rating is F. This summary is listed under Complaint Experience: "Some complainants allege actual cost of the move is increased after items are loaded onto the truck. Others allege items are not delivered within 7 to 14 days as promised, items are missing or damaged on delivery, and poor customer service. A few complainants allege the company arrives at the destination without any assistance and the complainants are required to help unload the items themselves."
  • Number of complaints processed in the last 36 months: 31. The complaints were mostly resolved.
    From other sources:

    • MovingScam.com: mentioned on MovingScam.com, they also found the connection to AVLWM and recommend people to avoid this company.
    • ConsumerAffairs.com: no mentioning of that company on ConsumerAffairs.com
    • RipOffReport.com: no mentioning of that company on RipOffReport.com
    • Complaints.com: no mentioning of that company on Complaints.com
    • Epinions.com: no mentioning of that company on Epinions.com
    • Other Sources: found few complaints on American Van Lines, but it seems like this generic name is widely used by many companies all over the country. No additional mentioning of Federal Movers found.

    Summary:

I recommend to be very cautious about using this company. It is young, but seems to be just a reincarnation of an old company with a poor history.

If you still decide for some reason to hire this company we advise you to take some protective steps. Follow the guidelines in our Moving Guide regarding closing deals with movers and understanding your estimate, and make sure you insist on having an on-site visual and getting a binding estimate (but that should be done regardless of who you choose for your move). Also, insure your valuable items on MovingInsurance.com.

I would also recommend you to do some more shopping around to see what other companies have to offer. You can get few quotes from several long distance movers right here.

    Good luck with your move,
