Unified Moving Services, USDOT#1305395

Safety Of Use Rating: F
(44.75%, STAY AWAY - see how we calculate SOUR)

A word about this company: Unified does not seem to be a scam mover, but being just 2 years in business and having a not so good ratio of estimated moves per year vs. recorded complaints (although most of them were resolved) gives them a STAY AWAY S.O.U.R.

From their website www.unifiedmovingservices.com:

  • This company is independent (not an agent for any major van lines).
  • Licensing information: US DOT #1305395, MC #506584
  • Services offered: commercial, residential, local, interstate and international moves.
  • Contact Information: phones: (800) 406-1649, (301) 386-0906, (301) 386-4049 , address: 6217 Columbia Park Road, Hyattsville, MD 20785
  • Members of: AMSA, BBB

From Safersys.org:

Safersys.org reveals the following information:
  • Licensing info: US DOT #1305395, MC #506584
  • Trucks: 1.
  • Phones: (301) 386-0906
  • Office location: 6217 Columbia Park Road, Hyattsville, MD 20785
  • The information in the Safersys.org report indicates no problems with their license and insurance.
  • Inspections section shows the following statistics:
    - Driver out-of-service rating: above the national average
    - Vehicle out-of-service rating: lower then the national average
From Better Business Bureau:

  • Members of the BBB
  • Original Business Start Date: March 15, 2005
  • Based on BBB files, this company has a satisfactory record with the Bureau. At the same time they had 5 complaints, so the "satisfactory" record can be explained by a variety of factors, such as the fact that this company resolved all the complaints (or that it is a member of the BBB...)
  • Number of complaints processed in the last 36 months: 5. Complaints issues: Refund Practices (1), Credit or Billing Disputes (1), Repair (1), and Service Issues (2). The complaints where resolved.
    From other sources:

    • MovingScam.com: this company is mentioned several times on MovingScam.com, although no complaints. They do not recommend using this company because it was very young at the time of those comments and had a fleet of 1 truck (now they also have too many complaints on the BBB).

    • ConsumerAffairs.com: no mentioning of that company on ConsumerAffairs.com

    • RipOffReport.com: no mentioning of that company on RipOffReport.com

    • Complaints.com: no mentioning of that company on Complaints.com

    • Epinions.com: no mentioning of that company on Epinions.com

    • Other Sources: found few more places where the company is mentioned, usually negative (e.g. this report from Complaints.com).

    Summary:

As I mentioned earlier, this company does not seem to be a scammer, but their BBB record indicates that chances are that 1 out of each 2 moves they perform will result in some sort of dissatisfaction for the consumer.

If you still decide for some reason to hire this company we advise you to take some protective steps. Follow the guidelines in our Moving Guide regarding closing deals with movers and understanding your estimate, and make sure you insist on having an on-site visual and getting a binding estimate (but that should be done regardless of who you choose for your move). Also, insure your valuable items on MovingInsurance.com.

I would recommend you to do some more shopping arround to see what other companies have to offer. You can get few quotes from several long distance movers right here. In any case, never book with a company that did not perform a visual estimate in your house and did not give you a flat price for your move. Good luck with your move,
