A-1 First Class – Viking Moving & Storage, Inc, USDOT# 444788

Safety Of Use Rating: A
(96.99%, RECOMMENDED - see how we calculate SOUR)

From their website www.a1firstclass.com:

  • This company is an agent for Atlas Van Lines.
  • Licensing information: US DOT #125550, NYDOT: #11346
  • Services offered: local, long distance, commercial, storage, international, document management.
  • Contact Information:
    phones: 800-545-6683 (toll free), 212 369 2985 (Manhattan), 718-745-3400 (Brooklyn), 516-594-8700 (Long Island) ,
addresses: 174 52nd Street, Brooklyn, NY 11232, and 630 Merrick Road, Lynbrook, NY 11563

  • Members of: not specified

From Safersys.org:

Safersys.org reveals the following information:
  • Licensing info: US DOT #444788, MC #231448
  • Trucks: 2.
  • Phones: (516) 594-8700
  • Office location: 174 52nd Street, Brooklyn, NY 11232
  • The information in the Safersys.org report indicates that for some reason their common authority license is inactive, meaning that they are basically not authorised for hire. It seems like they have the same problem as the company we rated before, so if you do plan to hire them I would recommend you to ask the sales rep to clarify that point. Insurance record seems to be OK.
  • Inspections section shows the following statistics:
    - Driver out-of-service rating: way above the national average
    - Vehicle out-of-service rating: way above the national average

Curiously, they do have a satisfactory safety rating, probably due to very few inspections they had.
From Better Business Bureau:

  • Members of the BBB
  • Original Business Start Date: 1/1/1948
  • Number of complaints processed in the last 36 months: none.
    From other sources:

    Summary:

This company seems to be OK, and in general I would recommend using it. Their licensing issue is unclear, and they have some bad traces here and there. Also, it is unclear how many trucks they actually have, since according to safersys.org they only operate 2 trucks, however I personally remember seeing more at their location near the 2nd ave in Brooklyn (but those could have been other Atlas trucks as well).

If you still decide for some reason to hire this company we advise you to take some protective steps. Follow the guidelines in our Moving Guide regarding closing deals with movers and understanding your estimate, and make sure you insist on having an on-site visual and getting a binding estimate (but that should be done regardless of who you choose for your move). Also, insure your valuable items on MovingInsurance.com.

    Good luck with your move,

    Alex Z. @ MovingAnswers.org
