Liffey Van Lines, USDOT#663326

Safety Of Use Rating: AA
(100.00%, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - see how we calculate SOUR)

From their website www.liffeyvanlines.com:

(The company also has a page on Allied site: http://www.alliedagent.com/liffey )
  • This company is an agent for Allied Van Lines.
  • Licensing information: not specified
  • Services offered: local, long distance, storage, and (interestingly) moves to Ireland (well, if you look at their website you will understand why...).
  • Contact Information:
    phones: 800-554-3339 (toll free), (212) 410-3500 (NYC), (845) 628-5500 (Long Island),
addresses: 229 East 120th Street, New York, NY 10035, and 429 Stillwater Road, Mahopac, NY 10541

  • Members of: not specified.
We found through other sources that the company is indeed licensed to do local moves both in New York and New Jersey (NY DOT #10845, and NJ PM #00682)

From Safersys.org:

Safersys.org reveals the following information:
  • Licensing info: US DOT #663326, no MC licence
  • Trucks: 19.
  • Phones: (212) 410-3500
  • Office location: 429 Stillwater Road, Mahopac, NY 10541
  • The information in the Safersys.org report indicates some issues with their license (they have an X mark next to "APPLYING F" instead of "Auth. For Hire") and we couldn't locate their insurance file.
  • Inspections section shows the following statistics:
    - Driver out-of-service rating: below the national average
    - Vehicle out-of-service rating: below the national average

There is however no safety rating for this company.
From Better Business Bureau:

This company has two BBB reports and we will summarize them both:
  • Members of the BBB
  • Original Business Start Date: 1/1/1975
  • Number of complaints processed in the last 36 months: none.
    From other sources:

    • New York State Movers & Warehousemens Association: listed as a member
    • LIMSA: not listed as a member
    • MovingScam.com: The company is mentioned on MovingScam.com. MovingScam.com have no recorded complaints on them, and they mention that this company's reps always offer binding estimates, which is a good sign. They do however mention that its not cheap. Actually, they say its very expensive.
    • ConsumerAffairs.com: no mentioning of that company on ConsumerAffairs.com
    • RipOffReport.com: no mentioning of that company on RipOffReport.com
    • Complaints.com: no mentioning of that company on Complaints.com
    • Epinions.com: no mentioning of that company on Epinions.com
    • Other Sources: no other mentioning of that company found elsewhere.

    Summary:

I would recommend using this company, of course, if you are not afraid of paying premium price for your move. Not only this company is an agent of a major van lines, they also have a relatively big fleet of trucks and own a storage, so they must be handling very large volumes of moves. With that in mind they have no complaints recorded anywhere on the net, giving them an AAA Safety of Use Rating. They also got an excellent internal quality score from Allied.

The issue with license should still be raised when talking to their sales reps.

In any case, to stay on a safe side follow the guidelines in our Moving Guide regarding closing deals with movers and understanding your estimate, and make sure you insist on having an on-site visual and getting a binding estimate (although it seems like those guys will offer that to you anyway), and insure your valuable items on MovingInsurance.com.

    Good luck with your move,

    Alex Z. @ MovingAnswers.org
