Answer by julie (Julie Owens)
Congratulations on your upcoming move! Moving to Canada is surely going to be an exciting venture for you and/or your family. When relocating from the United States to Canada, you want to be sure that you have the proper paperwork for customs.
You and your moving company must meet at customs with your belongings. In order for your items to be cleared, you must be present or they will be "held in bond."
You will also need to present personal identification at the Canadian border. When moving to Canada, you (and your family) will need a valid passport or birth certificate, photo ID such as a drivers license, a Canadian work visa from your new employer, two copies listing all of the items you are moving and a letter from your new employer stating your relocation purposes are for work. If you have items that you are shipping to Canada, you will then need to provide customs a listing of these items.
Also, be sure to check with Canadian customs before you move. There many be new regulations and paperwork you need to have. This is also a great opportunity to ask any questions pertaining to your upcoming move.
Best of Luck!
