Question by jimnche (Charlotte Caldwell)

Moving a small amount of household items to the UK from the US

I am moving a small amount of household items to the United Kingdom from the United States. We live in the San Francisco Bay Area and want to ship some items to the United Kingdom, primarily paintings (about 30), as well as two bicycles and various small bits and pieces. What is the best way to do this? Time is not an issue.   Thanks! Charlotte

Hi Charlotte,

There are many reputable International Movers in the San Francisco Bay Area. For your move, I would suggest getting at least three estimates in order to compare their services and rates. The painting will have to be specially crated or packed for protection to be sent by air or sea. With both shipment types, the goods will be packed and secured in a lift van, which also has special International requirements. The mover that is chosen should handle all details of the requirements to ship to the United Kingdom, including customs, inventories and insurance. Also, it is very important that you choose a moving company that has the proper licenses and reputation-reviews and word-of-mouth are a start to assess credentials, followed by actually meeting with them and seeing their licenses. Make sure a mover does an on-site survey of the items to be shipped, in order to receive an accurate quote that includes any additional fees and charges. Just getting a quote from the Internet is not advisable for this type of shipment.

Best of Luck!
